Building your itinerary

One week is the ideal length for a first Slovenia road trip, 4-5 days the minimum to see the essentials, and 10 days to 2 weeks the real comfort zone if you want the coast and the east. Slovenia is small, about two hours of driving from the Alps to the Adriatic, but every valley deserves a stop.

How many days, which route

• 2-3 days, the Ljubljana city break: two full days for the capital (old town, castle, central market, the Open Kitchen food market on Fridays), then one day trip to Lake Bled or the Postojna-Predjama duo.
• 4-5 days, the essential north-west: Ljubljana, two days around Bled and Bohinj, a day of caves. Sleep two nights in the same place on the lakes side.
• One week, the grand loop: my number one recommendation. Add the Soča Valley, crossing over the Vršič Pass if the 2026 traffic rules allow it or on the car train (my preferred option), then drop through the Karst towards Piran.
• 10 days, the ideal pace: the same loop with two nights per base, an extra hike and two full days on the coast.
• 2 weeks, the complete Slovenia: add the east (Ptuj, the Jeruzalem vineyards, the Prekmurje spas) and Logarska Dolina.

Your arrival shapes the itinerary

• Flying in: build a loop from Ljubljana airport, where you pick up and return the rental car. No region is more than two hours from the capital.
• Driving in: cross in a line between two gateways, Tarvisio in the north (straight into Kranjska Gora) and Trieste in the south-west, twenty minutes from the Slovenian coast.
• By train: the Ljubljana city break works entirely car-free; beyond it, rent a car locally, as rail serves the cities, not the valleys.

The three classic mistakes

• Changing hotels every night: two to four base camps are enough.
• Combining Slovenia and Croatia in one week: the combo works from 10-12 days.
• Underestimating logistics: the e-vignette from the first kilometre of motorway, the 2026 Soča permit for some valley sites, winter equipment from 15 November to 15 March, and car parks full at Bled and Vintgar by late morning in summer.
