Which region to choose
Slovenia splits into 5 main regions: the Julian Alps, Central Slovenia, the Adriatic Coast, the Karst and Pannonia in the east. For a first trip, combine Ljubljana and the Julian Alps, then add the Karst if you have 4 days or more.
The 5 regions in a nutshell
- Julian Alps: nature, hiking, lakes and mountains. Don't miss Bled, Bohinj, the Soča and Triglav. It is the most spectacular and most visited region.
- Central Slovenia: city, culture and nightlife, with Ljubljana at its heart.
- Adriatic Coast: sea, beaches and Mediterranean ease in Piran, Portorož and Koper.
- The Karst: caves, the unusual and family outings, with Postojna, Škocjan and Lipica.
- Pannonia (east): vineyards, thermal spas and quiet, around Maribor, Ptuj and Celje.
Match the region to your profile
There is no single "best" region; it depends on what you are coming for:
- Mountains and pristine lakes: the Julian Alps.
- Urban buzz and culture: Ljubljana.
- Sea, sun and terraces: the Adriatic Coast.
- Mystery, caves and raw nature: the Karst.
- Vineyards, spas and quiet: Pannonia.
Travelling with children?
The Karst is ideal for families thanks to Postojna Cave, visited by a small train, and the Lipica stud farm. The Adriatic Coast also appeals to children, with the beaches and water park of Portorož.
How many regions in one week?
In 7 days, two to three regions are realistic without rushing, for example Ljubljana, the Julian Alps and the Karst. Slovenia is compact (200 km east to west), but mountain roads slow journeys down, so don't judge distances by the map alone.
A first-trip recipe
- Short stay: Central Slovenia (Ljubljana) plus the Julian Alps (Bled, Bohinj), the most iconic and easily accessible combination.
- 4 days or more: add the Karst and Postojna Cave.
- Two weeks: the coast and Pannonia's vineyards and spas come within reach.
Not sure yet? The five-question quiz on the full guide points you to the region that fits your profile.
Key takeaway: for a first visit, pair Ljubljana with the Julian Alps and keep the other regions for extra days or a return trip.
