By car: vignette and car rental

A car is the best way to explore Slovenia beyond the main corridors. Two things make or break the experience: a valid e-vinjeta motorway vignette (€16 a week for a car, €300 fine without one) and a rental booked early, because the fleet is small.

The vignette in 2026

• Prices for a car (class 2A): €16 for 1 week, €32 for 1 month, €117.50 for 1 year. There is no 1-day vignette. Motorbikes pay €8 a week, €32 per half-year, €58.70 a year.
• Campervans: under 3.5 t but taller than 1.30 m above the front axle means class 2B, €32 a week. Over 3.5 t, you need a DarsGo toll unit.
• Where to buy: online at evinjeta.dars.si, the only official shop; reseller sites add hefty fees. It is tied to your plate and checked by ANPR cameras on all motorways and expressways, including the Ljubljana ring road.
• The 7-day trap: Saturday to the following Saturday is 8 days, not 7. The vignette starts on the date you choose, so plan your motorway days to fit one week.
• Karavanke tunnel: a separate toll of €9 per crossing. The Ljubelj (Loibl) pass or the Tarvisio route avoid it.

Renting a car

• Book early: in July and August economy categories sell out months ahead. Automatic gearboxes are a minority, so reserve one well ahead if you don't drive a manual. Brokers such as Auto Europe almost always allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup.
• Vignette: a Slovenian-registered car carries its annual vignette, but confirm it at pickup. Rent in Venice, Trieste or Zagreb and the Slovenian vignette is your responsibility.
• Borders: check the list of permitted countries and the ferry clause (Croatian islands usually need written authorisation). Some Italian contracts forbid leaving Italy.
• Deposit and excess: the deposit is blocked on a credit card in the main driver's name; debit cards are often refused. Excess cover bought online is markedly cheaper than at the counter. Photograph the car at pickup and drop-off.
• Licence and age: EU and UK licences are accepted as they are; for US, Canadian or Australian licences an International Driving Permit is recommended. Most companies ask for 21 years and one year of licence.

Rules of the road

50 km/h in towns, 90 outside, 110 on expressways, 130 on motorways. Dipped headlights day and night, a 0.05% blood-alcohol limit, and winter equipment mandatory from 15 November to 15 March.
