Getting to Slovenia: plane, train, car

Flying is the fastest way in: Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) has direct flights from London, and Venice, Trieste or Zagreb are often cheaper alternatives within about two and a half hours by road. From Central Europe, the car, train and bus all work well.

By plane

• Ljubljana (LJU): the country's only airport with scheduled international flights, 26 km from the capital and 35 minutes from Lake Bled. From the UK: easyJet from Gatwick (about two hours) and British Airways from Heathrow, with a Luton route joining from late 2026. Around thirty direct routes operate in summer.
• From North America: no direct flights. Connect once through a European hub, or fly open-jaw into Venice and out of Zagreb (or vice versa) and drive Slovenia in between.
• Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso: usually the cheapest, about 2 h 30 by motorway to Ljubljana, slightly less to the Soča Valley.
• Trieste (TRS): 1 h 15 from Ljubljana and 45 minutes from Piran, the smartest arrival for the coast and the Karst.
• Zagreb (ZAG): 1 h 45 from Ljubljana, the natural gateway to Maribor, Ptuj and the eastern spas.

From Ljubljana Airport, public bus 28 reaches the centre in about 50 minutes for €3.90, shared shuttles cost around €12-15 booked ahead, and a taxi €35-50. GoOpti shared shuttles link Venice, Treviso, Trieste, Zagreb, Munich and Vienna with any address in Slovenia; pricing is dynamic, so book your shuttle the day you book your flight.

By car

About 4 hours from Munich or Vienna, 5 from Milan, roughly 1,450 km (two days) from London. From three people up, the car is the cheapest option per person. Buy the e-vinjeta online before the border (€16 per week) and note that the Karavanke tunnel from Austria is tolled separately; the Italian route via Tarvisio avoids it.

By train or bus

• Train: a direct EuroCity from Vienna, about six hours from Munich, and the ÖBB Nightjet sleeper. From the UK: Eurostar to Paris or Brussels, high-speed rail to Munich or Zurich, then the night train. Interrail and Eurail passes are valid.
• Bus: FlixBus reaches Ljubljana from Venice, Munich or Vienna in three to six hours for a few euros booked ahead.

Before you set off

Slovenia is in Schengen and the eurozone. UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitors need a passport and can stay visa-free up to 90 days in any 180. Sockets are C/F at 230 V: bring an adapter.
