When to visit Slovenia

If your dates are free, come in June or September: lakes above 20 °C, alpine passes open, and half the crowds of August. On a tight budget? November has the lowest rates of the year. Snow? January-February.

Slovenia packs four climates into a country 200 km across: alpine in the north, Mediterranean on the coast, continental in the east. Every month has its moment of grace and its trap.

The seasons at a glance

• Winter (December-February): Ljubljana's Christmas market, skiing at Kranjska Gora, Vogel or Krvavec (25 minutes from the capital) with lift passes far cheaper than in the western Alps, thermal spas, and in February Kurentovanje in Ptuj, the country's biggest carnival.
• Spring (March-May): low prices and quiet sights. In April the snowmelt swells the waterfalls and Vintgar Gorge reopens. May is my favourite month: everything is green, the mid-mountains are hikeable, and the 2026 Soča navigation permit costs half price outside high season. Peaks above 2,000 m keep their snowfields.
• Summer (June-August): the Vršič Pass and the Mangart road open in June, the lakes reach 22-24 °C in July, and the Soča Valley is in full whitewater swing. August is peak season, with afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.
• Autumn (September-November): crowds halve and prices follow, the grape harvest runs from late August to early October in Goriška Brda, the Vipava Valley and around Maribor, the forests catch fire in October, and martinovanje on 11 November celebrates the young wine.

July and August: yes, but with a timetable

Bled, Vintgar and Postojna saturate between 10 am and 4 pm. Visit the big sights before 9 am or after 5 pm, keep afternoons for swimming or for quieter regions such as Prekmurje, Dolenjska or Koroška, and book accommodation and rental cars months ahead. In the mountains, start early and be down by 3 pm.

Good to know

• Lake Bohinj runs 2-3 degrees cooler than Lake Bled. The Soča stays icy year-round: people paddle it in wetsuits.
• Vršič and Mangart close with the snow, generally from November to April-May. In 2026 a new traffic regime applies on Vršič in high season.
• The caves stay at a constant 10 °C all year, a good plan whatever the weather.
• Cheapest periods: November, then March-April and the second half of October.

The classic trap: booking Bled in August with no fallback plan. Car parks fill by 10 am. Sleep on site or at Bohinj, walk the lake before breakfast and take the boat to the island at opening time.
